Advert

Analysis of two other sources:
The artist Ladyhawke fits into the indie - rock genre like our chosen band Hard - Fi . From analysing an advert for an artist from the same genre may help me with producing an advert for my artist.

The advert as a whole has been designed in a retro 80's theme which may appeal to an older audience rather than younger people. The colour scheme is simple with very little variation in colour tone. There are splats of bright colours over the page but the majority of the advert is covered in a dull greyish tone.

The font used for the artists name and album name appears to be handwritten which gives the advert a sence of individalism as a regular computer generated font hasn't been used. The font used on the rest of the text is a simple easy to read one which is probably been used to make sure the audience can clearly read the important infomation on the advert and therfore make them go and buy the album.

One image takes up the right quater of the advert making it interesting to look at, without the image i think this would be one boring advert to look at. The image is from what i guess a cat covered in a white sheet which i don't quite understand but it might have some relevence within a song perhaps and this images was used because it would grab the audiences eye more as it's far more unusaul and creative to look at.

As far as technical effects go not a lot have been used to spruce this advert up, however one effect i like on here is how the advert appears to be printed on the back of another piece of text as you can see the text faintly all over the advert.

Digipack

For the next part of the task we have to create a digipack for our artist and music video for this i will need to analyse other bands from the same genre as our chosen band and try to gather some ideas from their digipacks. We have to make front, middle and back pages.
A digipack is initially a CD cover/case. We have to make one of these to promote our music video, we are required to create a front, middle and back page.
Digipacks consist of 4 pages - front middle and back. Inside theres the CD and booklet about the album. They are normally made from card and plastic and have plastic holders inside for the CD and or DVD. They consist of a gate fold paperboard so they're in the style of a book.
A Promo pack contains everything that was used to promote the band. This includes the video, advert, demo tape, song list, lyrics posters and all other elements that promote the band. We are required to make one of these for the promotion of our chosen band.

One digipack i will analyse is 'Only by the Night' by Kings of Leon;

Front - The design concept of this cover is unusual and bordering on absurdism. The black and red on white gives the cover a wild and crazy appearance. This is also a representation of the stereotype of Rock because the image is almost shocking and violent.
The text is small and in a simple regular font, this gives the band a sense of originality and simplicity.

The image is an abstract compilation of feathers and eagles. The eagle is a symbol of strength and power so this is an ideal image for a rock band.

Middle

This page consists of only the symbol and the markings around the outside of the page. Again this page is conveying the sense of simplicity and originality.
Overall the page isn't fun to look at but is ideal for a center page as people don't tend to take notive of the inside.

Back

The colour and fonts used are unique but it is hard to read so this could confuse people.

Again the colour most consistant is white which makes the page look new and clean and almost pure. The page is crowded and full of content which is good to look at but may make the page look over the top and too full on.

Front - The design on the front is somewhat enigmatic as there is no real link to the band or the meaning of behind why there are these elements in the frame.

The randomness adds humor to the page giving it public appeal. Being random is popular amongst rock bands as they all seem to strive to be as different as possible. We'll need to take this into consideration when making our digipack.

The colours give the design a positive look although there is no real wow factor about the page, for a typical rock band they haven't used the stereotypical bright colour scheme used by various other artists.

Middle - Showing the band is a good factor as the fans will want to see their role models and musical hero's.

A photo has been used of the band with no editing affects giving it a fresh look. Again the page is made comical by the use of the photo. Comedy is also popular among rock bands and artists.

Back

Another image of the band has been used which will help promote the bands album.

The band members expression is comical giving him the main attention in the photo.

A Black and white affect has been used which makes the photo look authentic and old.

The clothes are very typical of a rock band, the weird hats, leather jackets, tank tops.

Flat Plans

1. On the front cover i decided to have CCTV cameras looking at the earth because it linked to the name of the album and song "Stars of CCTV". I thought stars and thought of space then it all flowed from there. This idea would give the digipack a mordern/futuristic appearance making it more appealing to people in our target audience.

The colours would be bright giving off a positive image and making it appealing to look at.

2. the left inside panel is an image of a dirty and graffitied wall in the street, this would portray the idea that the music video involves grimy settings and so it all relates together.

The colour scheme would be dull greys and slightly monotoned emphasising the dirty, grimy affect.

The plan for a our music video

The song we have chosen to create a music video for is 'Stars of CCTV' by Hard-Fi. For this project we had to choose a song that didn't already have a music video made for it so that made the task of finding a song even harder. But thankfully we found a song that we all agreed we liked and hadn't got a music video. We thought this would be an ideal song choice because it's by a well known band, it's a good song to listen too and we've already thought of some good ideas for our actual video.

Target Audience: The target audience we found for the band Hard fi was generally young people. The target audience, on the socio economic scale, were working/middle class and up although not the top classess. The band are very popular amongst young people including students which are our target audience. The groups have had a huge success in the music industry ad have been nominated for various awards such as the Brits and Mercury awards.

Their album "Stars of CCTV" is the album we have picked our song from has also proved very successful and reached the number one spot in 2006. The album has sold over 1.2 million world wide with 600,000 in the UK alone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Fi) making this album a good one to focus on.

This is a brief plan i made at the beginning of the task. This helped with choosing the right band and song for the video.

Lyrics: Stars of CCTV - Hard-Fi
And every move that I make
Gets recorded to tape
So somebody up there
Can keep me safe

I'm going out tonight
I've got my hair just right
I'm always looking good
For the spotlight

Stick 'em up
Give me the money
A winning smile
Up to the gallery

I'm gonna get my face on the 6 'o' clock news
We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street
We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?

On every corner, every street
Down every underpass you'll see
Somebody's stealing the show
Somebody looking like me

I'll see you out tonight
Just got the pose just right
We're always looking good
For the spotlight

We turn it on
And so we're full of speed
We fill the screen
Can't help but notice me

I'm gonna get my face on the 6 'o' clock news
We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street
Flashing blue lights, camera, action
Watching my life, main attraction

We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?
We're the stars of CCTV
Making movies out on the street

Flashing blue lights, camera, action
Watching my life, main attraction
We're the stars of CCTV
Can't you see the camera loves me?

Analysis of another video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoNdgxPzSfc
One of their other music videos i like is 'Can't get along (without you)' and i have decided to analyse this one.
It's a narrative video in which for the majority of the video we see a chase scene between the lead singer and another man. At the beginnging we see the main character being knocked to the floor in a fight , in the next scene he is lying on the floor of what looks like a police van, he breaks out of the van and begins the chase sequence with the other guy he had a fight with. There are quick cuts in the chase sequence that go back to how he came to be in that situation which is useful becuase the audience watching now know what it going on.
We only see another band member once and thats when the chase enters a house and the drummer is sat playing in the living room.
One theme that pops up a lot throughout the video is violence and this is initially what the narrative in the video is about and what it revolves around until the climax at the end. At the end of the video the main man jumps into a car and escapes.

Slow motion close ups are used at the very begginning of the video to perhaps emphasis the event that was taking place and to make it seem a little bit more intense. Slow motion editing is used frequently throughout the video to convey the sense of exaggeration and that the actions are far more over the top than they appear.

Another one of their videos i will analyse is "Cash Machine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z7JgJedjRc . This video again sees young people being portrayed as criminals and vandals. In the video the youths are shown as being part of a gang who are working for an east end crime lord. Throughout the video the theme of espionage and crime is presented and the characters in the plot are shown commiting various criminal offences. The general plot is about the group of guys intercepting another man and retrieving his case. The band are shown performing in a field thats near an airport and they are all wearing white jump suits which could be portraying them as criminals. In various sections of the video the characters are wearing masks of well known political figures i.e Maggie Thatcher, this could be a way of representing rebellion on modern society.

Numerous low angle shots are used when the band are performing in the field giving the audeince the lower status and the band the power. The lead singer sometimes bends down to face directly into the camera which again gives him the higher status and allows him to be direct with the audience.

Their clothes are typical urban ones that are baggy and dirty giving them all a look of lower class in society. When they wear the white jumpsuits they all have the appearance of criminals.

Ideas so far...:
Nightime, black and white set up like a cctv camera following a person. Flash backs on various versuses to what happened to him.
Turns into a chase - he's under influence of drugs, he's running from himself?
________________________________________________________________________________

Mise-en-scene:
Clothes - Hoodies, jeans, t-shirts, trainers, urban wear. These are ideal as they fit the main persons character which is lower class, dodgy, teenage and bad in general.
Props - Fake drugs, cigarettes,
Setting - Average small town road (Lewes, brighton?) , urban area, late night, empty street, police patrol.
Colour - black and white - CCTV, normal regular lighting for flashbacks of the character,
Location: Dark street, general urban class society area. Another location will be in a regular working class house this will be featured in the characters flashbacks.
Time - Night time 11pm - 12am?

The video below outlines our intentions for the production of the music video.
